Matt and I spent our first 23 years together raising three kids and fine tuning careers. Then the kids moved out. The adjustment to the empty nest isn’t easy, but we started repurposing rooms in the house. Then Matt bought me an N-scale model railroad, something I have always found fascinating. Through the meticulous detailing of tiny buildings and landscapes, Matt discovered that the artwork calmed his mind and allowed him to relax – he wasn’t thinking about his class the next day or the endless to do list. I bought him a stained glass starting kit for Christmas and he hasn’t stopped since. I finally had time and space to play with my laser and started doing leatherwork. Our time together centered around artwork – we even converted the garage bar into a studio and Kidd Kreations was born.
We started going to festivals to sell our artwork to have more money for supplies and met some very talented local artists. We also liked to go on short day trips and see what other artists are doing: little Nashville, Madison, and Corydon are some of our favorite places to go. We found a new trend – stores carrying artwork by a lot of different artists – intermingled and absolutely fabulous! Then on a trip to Madison, we noticed that one of our favorite stores had living quarters in the back.
That’s when the spiral began – finding the right property with living quarters and a retail space – within our current budget. I’m not sure how many hours we each spent on Zillow – and then I saw it – the old general store in Canton. It was intriguing and the original shelving was gorgeous! We visited a few times with the realtor, took measurements, and started dreaming – and our offer was accepted! We put our house of 23 years on the market and got to work. The kids thought we’d lost our minds, but pitched in on the renovations anyway. Matt spent his summer off from teaching renovating the living quarters and started on the store in mid-July and we opened The Kreating Post in October 2026.
